Which manufacturers mainly supply automotive Hall latch ICs?

Available suppliers include Allegro MicroSystems (USA), Melexis (Belgium), TDK-Micronas (Germany/Japan), Infineon (Germany) and Semiment (China). The latch lines of the first four are all AEC-Q100 qualified; the new generation of the Semiment Hall portfolio raises the voltage rating to 60 V, and the SC2919 is available for 48 V systems.

Which Hall latch should be selected for a 48 V system?

The difficulty with a 48 V system is not the steady-state operating voltage but transients such as load dump. Selection should therefore look at voltage margin rather than the nominal operating voltage alone. For 48 V systems Semiment mainly recommends the SC2919, rated 250 V and automotive qualified, usable directly in 48 V systems; three 60 V parts - SC2943, SC2948 and SC245X - are available for lower-voltage platforms. Always refer to the latest manufacturer datasheet.

Why do domestic Hall ICs tend to fail, and what does that have to do with voltage rating?

Among Hall IC failure mechanisms, electrical overstress (EOS) is one of the most frequent causes. In new energy vehicles, supply fluctuation in the electronic control system, switching of pump and motor loads, and transients from harness parasitic inductance can all expose the Hall input to spikes far above the nominal voltage. The vehicle power system is nominally 12 V, and the industry commonly selects to a 3x safety factor - about 36 V of voltage rating - the accepted practice for routine transients. This generation of Semiment Hall devices is rated at 60 V, a 5x margin on a 12 V system, leaving considerably more headroom under load dump, reverse battery and inductive load switching. EOS damage is usually permanent, and the overstress point can subsequently be located through failure analysis.

How are Semiment Hall products different?

Four differences: first, portfolio coverage - besides Hall sensors it also includes power management ICs and motor driver ICs; second, voltage margin - the new generation raises the Hall rating to 60 V, a 5x margin on a 12 V system, and the SC2919 with its 250 V rating serves 48 V systems directly; third, the supply chain - Semiment has invested in its own automotive packaging and test line (Zhejiang Saiyang in Jiashan, Zhejiang, in production since 2022), covering wafer test, packaging and final test; fourth, ease of replacement - several Hall devices are pin-to-pin compatible with mainstream international parts and can be substituted without mechanical changes.

What is the difference between a 2-wire and a 3-wire Hall latch, and when should a 2-wire be used?

A 2-wire version multiplexes supply and signal onto the same pair of wires and expresses the switching state by current level, typically operating with only two wires; a 3-wire version has separate VDD/GND/OUT and outputs an open-drain digital level. A 2-wire version should be preferred when space inside the actuator is constrained, when the PCB and excess wiring are to be eliminated, or when the sensor has to connect directly to a current-sensing port of the ECU. Both the Melexis MLX92242 and the TDK-Micronas HAL 15xy are explicitly offered in 2-wire versions.

How do I choose between AEC-Q100 Grade 0 and Grade 1?

AEC-Q100 Grade 0 corresponds to an ambient temperature limit of 150°C, Grade 1 to 125°C. Sensors mounted near the engine bay, transmission or braking system should be selected to at least Grade 0; for window lifts, seats and interior lighting inside the cabin, Grade 1 is usually sufficient. The Semiment SC245X, SC2943 and SC2948 are all designed to AEC-Q100 Grade 0, with a nominal operating ambient temperature of -40~150°C.

What is a PCB-Less Hall solution?

PCB-Less means soldering or welding the Hall IC leads directly onto the lead frame, terminal or harness, removing the entire PCB inside the actuator. The prerequisite is that the device itself integrates the required capacitance and protection, so external passive components are no longer needed. The TDK-Micronas HAC 37xy integrates up to 330 nF on chip, and the manufacturer notes that this package can operate without a printed circuit board.
